Packing Tape Options We Offer

All of our packing tapes fall into three different categories:

Standard Multi-Purpose Tape

Standard multi-purpose packing tape is a clear or tan pressure-sensitive plastic tape which offers flexibility and tear resistance for normal handling. It is a single-sided adhesive tape on a plastic film backing that gets activated by pressure (no water or heat is needed). Standard multi-purpose packing tape is used for general box sealing and light- to medium-duty shipping, moving and storage.

We carry the following types of standard multi-purpose tape:

  • Hot Melt Tape – This is our most recommended tape for standard applications and storage uses. Hot melt tape is made with three layers: polypropylene (BOPP) film, hot melt adhesive and a release coating for better unwind performance. It offers superior holding strength on boxes with recycled content and delivers optimal performance on case sealing machinery.
  • Acrylic Tape – Acrylic tape is made with two layers: polypropylene (BOPP) film and an emulsion acrylic adhesive. It’s an excellent option for standard applications and storage uses, and it’s particularly effective for dusty and humid facilities.
  • Natural Rubber Tape – Natural rubber tape is the most heavy-duty multi-purpose packing tape we carry. It contains two layers: a natural, rubber-based adhesive and a polypropylene (BOPP) or PVC film backing. This pressure-sensitive tape provides the strongest adhesive across a broad range of environmental conditions and challenging product packaging, making it ideal for heavy boxers and goods.

Specialty Tapes

Specialty packing tapes are designed for specific applications, such as extra strength, security, temperature resistance or easier opening, rather than general light- to medium-duty carton sealing. Each specialty tape contains a backing, adhesive or design intended to solve a particular packaging problem. They allow for a more customized solution in situations where standard multi-purpose tapes aren’t necessarily the right option.

We carry the following types of specialty tapes:

  • Water Activated Tape – Water activated tape is a paper tape with a dry, starch-based adhesive that must be moistened to bond. It creates a very strong, tamper-evident seal with corrugated boxes and can be reinforced to provide additional protection. It’s an excellent option for boxes containing high valued goods.
  • Printed Tape – Printed tape has text, logos, graphics or other information printed on its surface to boost your brand awareness and visibility. We can print on a wide range of tape types, including water activated, acrylic and hot melt tape, providing customized solutions that will deliver the sealing capabilities you need for your specific application.
  • Colored Tape – Colored packing tape refers to standard multi-purpose tape that is made in solid colors rather than clear or tan. The primary benefit associated with colored tape is enhanced safety. You can easily see if it fails or falls off, making it a popular option for food processing applications. It can also be used to easily differentiate between product types stored in your boxes.
  • Security/Tamper Evident Tape – Security/taper evident tape is designed to show clear, irreversible signs if someone tries to open, peel or reseal the package. It’s most commonly used when storing or shipping high value goods.

Industrial Tapes

Industrial packing tapes are thicker, higher-grade tapes with stronger adhesives designed to withstand conveyor systems, stacking and longer transit times, making them effective for commercial and warehouse applications.

Not All Packing Tapes Are Equal

There is a common misconception that all packing tape is created equal, and this often results in choosing a packing tape option based on price. Unfortunately, when you buy the cheapest tape, you often don’t get the best results for your specific application. The backing material and bonding agent will impact the effectiveness of the tape for your specific application, and using the wrong tape can cost you both money and time.

It’s important to consider the following factors when choosing the right packing tape:

  • Grade – Packing tape comes in a wide range of grades (film and adhesive thickness). The carton size, content weight, and production and shipping environment will all impact the right grade of tape for your applications.
  • Substrate – The material your carton is made from will impact the performance of your tape. It’s important to choose the right type of tape for the packaging you’re sealing.
  • Environment – The temperature, humidity and dust levels in the production, shipping and storage environments will impact the quality of the seal achieved by different types of packing tape.
  • Application Method – Packing tape can be applied either manually using a hand-held tape dispenser or in an automated process. Certain types of packing tape are more ideally suited to manual application, while others work better using an automated process.
  • Tape Quality – Higher quality packing tape will be easier to unwind, adhere better to the surface you’re sealing, and provide superior strength and durability.
